Life

Luís Valente de Oliveira attended the Colégio Almeida Garrett in Porto, after which he studied civil engineering at the University of Porto until 1961, where he also received his doctorate in 1973 . He has a degree in regional planning by the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague (1969) and a Master of Science degree in transportation planning by the Imperial College of London University (1971). Since 1980, Valente de Oliveira has been a professor in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto.

Valente de Oliveira assumed his first tasks between 1973 and 1978 as President of the Cabinet of the Commission for Regional Planning of the Northern Region of Portugal ( Gabinete técnico e da gestão da Comissão de Planeamento Regional do Norte ), between 1979 and 1985 he was President of the Commission for Coordination of the Northern Region of Portugal ( Commissão de Coordenação da Região Norte ).

Valente de Oliveira also held various government offices. Between 1978 and 1979 he was Minister of Education and Science under the Mota Pinto government , between 1986 and 1995 he was Minister of Property Management and Planning under the Cavaco Silva government (part of what is now the Ministry of the Environment), and between 2002 and 2003 he was under the government Barroso Minister for Public Works, Transport and Housing. He resigned from the latter position for health reasons.

Luís Valente de Oliveira is currently Vice President of the Portuguese Business Association ( Associação Empresarial de Portugal ). Valente de Oliveira published numerous specialist articles and books on civil engineering, regional and transport planning.

Luís Valente de Oliveira also received numerous honors, including the Portuguese Grand Cross of the Order of Infants ( Grã-Cruz da Ordem de Infante ) in 1980 , the Brazilian Grand Cross of the Southern Cross Order ( Grã-Cruz da Ordem do Cruzeiro do Sul ) in 1987 , and the Greek Grand Cross in 2002 of the Order of Honor and in 2004 with the Grand Cross of the Order of Christ ( Grã-Cruz da ordem Militar Cristo )
