Luciano A. Marraffini (* 1974 ) is an Argentina- born American microbiologist at Rockefeller University . He was able to make important contributions to the research of the CRISPR system. His research focuses on the mechanisms by which the CRISPR system integrates components of the viral genome and how this information is used to recognize and destroy bacteriophages .

Marraffini graduated from the 1998 National University of Rosario in Rosario , Argentina, a degree ( Lic. ) In biotechnology and in 2007 a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Chicago . After working as a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University , he received his first professorship (Assistant Professor) at Rockefeller University in 2010 and has been an Associate Professor since 2016 . He has also been doing research for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) since 2016

In 2015 Marraffini received the Hans Sigrist Prize from the University of Bern . In 2017, he and Emmanuelle Charpentier , Jennifer Doudna , Francisco Juan Martínez Mojica and Feng Zhang were awarded the Albany Medical Center Prize , which is endowed with 500,000 US dollars. In 2019 Marraffini was elected to the National Academy of Sciences .
