Lucius Statilius

Lucius Statilius († December 5, 63 BC in Rome ) was a Roman knight and member of the Catilinarian Conspiracy . He was together with four other conspirators on December 5th, 63 BC. . Chr sentenced to death and executed .

Life

Statilius came from the knighthood, the second highest rank in the Roman Republic after the senatorial rank . According to Marcus Tullius Cicero , he wrote at the beginning of December 63 BC. A letter to the members of the Celtic tribe of the Allobrogians , in which he asked them to support Lucius Sergius Catiline . Titus Volturcius , who was supposed to deliver these letters, was arrested on the night of December 3rd on the Milvian Bridge by two praetors . The letters were handed over to Cicero, who then had Statilius brought to him along with other conspirators who had also written letters to the Allobrogans. He was arrested and questioned in the Senate that same day. He confessed to having written the letter. On December 5, after a heated debate, the Senate decided that the arrested conspirators - including Statilius - deserved to be killed. The execution was carried out in the Tullianum that same day .
