Ludwig Chronegk (born November 3, 1837 in Brandenburg an der Havel , Brandenburg ; † July 9, 1891 in Meiningen , Thuringia ) was an actor, director and artistic director at the Meiningen Court Theater as well as a reformer of the director's theater and Privy Councilor .

Life

Chronegk came from a Jewish merchant family, received his training at grammar schools in Berlin and Potsdam and then studied French theater conditions for a year in Paris . After returning to Germany, he let Karl August Görner prepare him for a stage career. He played his first role in 1856 at the Kroll Theater in Berlin.

Until Chronegk became a member of the Meininger Hoftheater in 1866, he belonged to the theaters in Liegnitz and Görlitz , various Berlin theaters, the Hamburg Thalia , the theaters in Pest , Breslau , Königsberg (Prussia) and the Leipzig City Theater.

From 1874 Chronegk was officially active as a director. He gave up his acting activities - he was mainly interested in comic roles - in 1877 to devote himself exclusively to directing. In the same year he became senior director and director and, from 1884, director of the Meiningen court theater.

Chronegk created the Meiningen Principles together with the artistically ambitious Duke Georg II and his wife Helene Freifrau von Heldburg and thus carried out a far-reaching reform of the directorial theater. Under his leadership, the stage ensemble known as the Meininger on numerous guest tours throughout Europe from 1874 and established the good reputation of the Meininger court theater.

Chronegk fell seriously ill in 1886 and was only able to lead the tours to a limited extent, which were finally discontinued in 1890.
