Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Hartmann (born August 3, 1836 in Neuss , † February 14, 1910 in Dresden ) was a German composer and music critic .

Life

Hartmann was the son of the music director in Neuss, Friedrich Hartmann. He was trained at the Conservatory in Leipzig and then went to Weimar as a student of Franz Liszt . From 1859 until his death he lived in Dresden . His grave is in the local Johannisfriedhof in the Hartmann family grave. His wife Louise, daughter of the lawyer Julius von Kirchmann , also found her final resting place there.

In Dresden-Blasewitz , Ludwig-Hartmann-Strasse commemorates the composer.

Hartmann's compositions were particularly popular in his songs and ballads , but he has also performed successfully as a piano composer and pianist. As a music writer and critic he earned a very respected name in Dresden. In his more than 50 years of activity he campaigned primarily for Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss and supported young singers of the Semperoper .
