Ludwig Hoffmann-Rumerstein (born January 21, 1937 in Innsbruck ) is professed honor and devotion Grand Cross -Bailli and has been Grand Commander of the Order of Malta since 2014 , which he was once between 1994 and 2004. During the vacancy of the Grand Master's office following the resignation of Matthew Festing , which Pope Francis accepted on January 25, 2017, he was the reigning Grand Master of the Order of Malta until Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto was elected on May 2, 2018 .

Life

Born Ludwig Franz Xaver Irenäus Joseph Peter Raimund Maria Hoffmann-Rumerstein , he comes from the old Austrian family of Hoffmann von Rumerstein . As a result of the Nobility Abolition Act , the family lost the right to use the title.

Ludwig Hoffmann-Rumerstein studied philosophy and law after graduating from high school in 1957 .

Religious life

Hoffmann-Rumerstein entered the Order of Malta in 1970 and made perpetual vows in 1984. He became a professed knight and monk in the sense of canon law.

Hoffmann-Rumerstein was a co-founder of the Malteser-Hilfsdienst Tirol in 1968, and from 1984 a member of the Sovereign Council . In 1971 and 1979 he was head of the group of volunteers in Innsbruck and from 1977 to 1979 its commander. From 1979 to 1986 he was on the board of directors of Malteser Hospitaldienst Austria . In addition, he was responsible for the Lourdes hospital pilgrimage of the Malteser Hospitaldienst Austria for four years.

Hoffmann-Rumerstein was elected Grand Commander of the Order of Malta by the Sovereign Council for the period up to 2004. In May 2014 he was re-elected Grand Commander by the General Chapter.
