Campus der Demokratie is an idea of ​​the Federal Commissioner for the Documents of the Ministry for State Security of the former GDR , Roland Jahn , for the development of the former Stasi headquarters in Berlin. On June 12, 2013 the support group “Campus der Demokratie” eV was founded on the initiative of Danny Freymark , member of the Berlin House of Representatives .

Starting position

One of the most important occupations of state institutions took place at the former site of the Ministry for State Security of the German Democratic Republic as part of the Peaceful Revolution . On January 15, 1990, demonstrators stormed the headquarters of the repressive apparatus and occupied several buildings. Since then, the complex has been used by various owners and is now largely empty.

The idea of ​​setting up such a campus was born back in 2012. The building complex previously known as a repressive institution is to be given a positive impression. For this purpose, a place of lingering and learning with institutions of the education and society is to be established on site.

The grounds of the campus

Centrally located on the site of the former is now the Stasi Museum by sponsoring organization ASTAK eV in the former official residence of Erich Mielke , the Minister of State Security of the GDR until 1989. In addition, the Federal Commissioner for the Stasi Archives here his archive and a medical center, as well as some shops sit on site. Most of the properties, however, are empty. The office vacancy at the location makes up 20% of the vacancy in Berlin. The site borders Normannenstrasse in the north, opposite the Hans-Zoschke-Stadion . In the south it borders on Frankfurter Allee . Access to the site is via Ruschestraße 103, the former gate to the ministry. To the east, the site borders Magdalenenstrasse and the Lichtenberg district court . The area is connected with the underground station "Magdalenenstraße" directly to Berlin's center with the underground line 5.

The support group Campus der Demokratie e. V.

In the summer of 2013, the Förderkreis Campus der Demokratie e. V. founded. The Lichtenberg MP Danny Freymark , MdL , became the founding chairman . The aim of the association is to establish the "Campus of Democracy".

Permanent exhibition Peaceful Revolution

In 2015, an open-air exhibition on the Peaceful Revolution is being built in the courtyard of the huge building complex in Berlin-Lichtenberg. The permanent open-air exhibition follows on from the successful open-air exhibition on the Peaceful Revolution on Alexanderplatz in 2009/10.

“Campus of Democracy” in the coalition agreement

After the negotiations between the CDU / CSU and the SPD , the coalition agreement was published on November 27, 2013 . This also includes a passage on the promotion of the “Campus of Democracy”: “The coalition supports the plan to use and develop the former Stasi headquarters in Berlin-Lichtenberg as a place to educate people about dictatorship and resistance .” (Coalition Agreement, p 130).
