Ludwig Jäger (born October 24, 1943 in Homburg ) is a German linguist, media and cultural scientist.

Life

Ludwig Jäger studied German, history and philosophy in Heidelberg. In 1975 he received his doctorate from the University of Düsseldorf with the dissertation "On a historical reconstruction of the authentic language idea of Ferdinand de Saussure ". Jäger continues to work with Saussure to this day. In 1978 he completed his habilitation at the University of Düsseldorf , and in 1982 he was appointed to the chair of German Philology at RWTH Aachen University (successor to Hans Glinz ).

From 1984 to 1986 he was department head and from 1986 to 1987 dean of the Faculty of Philosophy at RWTH, and from 1987 to 1990 he was electoral senator in the RWTH Senate. From 1987 to 1988 he was secretary of the German Society for Linguistics (DGfS) , and from 1991 to 1994 as chairman of the German Association of Germanists . In 1993/94 he was a member of the initiative group set up by the German Association of Germanists to found an interdisciplinary research college "Language, literature and culture in the changing media conditions". In 1999 Jäger first became deputy director, from 2002 to 2008 managing director of the research college “Media and Cultural Communication” (SFB / FK 427) at the universities of Aachen, Bonn and Cologne and headed the sub-project “Mediality and Language Signs”.

In 2003/2004 he was a fellow at the International Research Center for Cultural Studies (IFK) in Vienna, in 2010/2011 a fellow at the International Morphomata College in Cologne and in 2012/2013 at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS).

He is currently a member of the University Council of the University of Giessen , Senior Advisor at the Center for Sign Language and Gesture (SignGes) at RWTH Aachen University and Senior Advisor in the International College Morphomata in Cologne.

Research priorities

Jäger's research focuses on the areas of media theory, language and sign theory, sign language as well as German history and the history of theory in linguistics.
