Ludwig tile (engraver)
Ludwig Kachel (born August 17, 1791 in Ludwigsburg , † February 7, 1878 in Karlsruhe ) was Baden Coin Council from 1836, and from 1846 president of the Baden Art Association for 20 years. Signature: K; TILE.
Life
He was the son of a stone cutter and metal engraver. In 1816 he came as Münzzögling to Münzrat Dieze to Mannheim , where he Münzpraktikant 1820 and 1824 Münzwardein was. After Dieze's death in 1824 he was given the management of the mint. In 1826 the mint was moved from Mannheim to the Münzbau designed by Friedrich Weinbrenner in Karlsruhe. There Kachel married the daughter of the building councilor Fischer in 1828 and was appointed to the mint council in 1836. His activities not only included the production of Baden coins, he was also entrusted with the design of the first Baden stamps . In 1871 he received the title of privy councilor . After 50 years of managing the Baden mint, he retired in 1874.
In addition to his professional activity, Kachel belonged to numerous associations, including the Baden Art Association, which he headed as president for 20 years from 1846.
Kachel was awarded the Knight's Cross in 1841, the Commander's Cross of the Zähringer Order of the Lion in 1864 and the Star of the Zähringer Order of the Lion in 1874.
His sons were Ludwig Kachel , a history painter, and Gustav Kachel , architect and director of the Karlsruhe School of Applied Arts. The latter was married to Louise Kachel-Bender , his daughter-in-law. His daughter Alice was married to the painter Karl Roux .
