Ludwig Karl Alexander von Alvensleben (born September 4, 1778 in Schenkenhorst , Altmark, † August 30, 1842 in Zichtau ) was a Prussian officer and a literary figure in Theodor Fontane's novel " Schach von Wuthenow ".

Life

He came from the Low German noble family von Alvensleben and was the fifth child of the district administrator of the Altmark Johann Friedrich von Alvensleben (1747–1829) and Sophie von Alvensleben (1744–1815) from Neugattersleben , and joined the Gensdarmes regiment in Berlin at the age of 13 and was promoted to staff assistant master by 1804. As such, he appears as one of the main literary characters in Theodor Fontane's historical novel “Schach von Wuthenow”, which was printed in 1882 and which reflects the social and political conditions in Berlin and Prussia shortly before the collapse of Prussia in 1806. In the summer of 1806 Alvensleben was a participant in a sleigh part described in chapters 10 and 11 of the novel, which was supposed to be a parody of the play "Consecration of Power" by Zacharias Werner performed in the Berlin theater . But it was misunderstood in parts of Berlin society and by the king and aroused considerable displeasure. This led to his transfer to Silesia. In the war against Napoleon that soon followed , he repeatedly distinguished himself through bravery and received the order Pour le Mérite on February 3, 1807 . In the Wars of Liberation in 1815 he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class as Major and Squadron Chief . In 1817 he left the army and lived in Zichtau until his death. He was a knight of the Order of St. John and since 1837 chamberlain to the Duke of Anhalt-Bernburg .
