Ludwig Keller

Ludwig Keller (born May 28, 1849 in Fritzlar ; † March 9, 1915 in Berlin ) was a German archivist and important Freemason historian.

Professional background

After studies at the Universities of Leipzig and Marburg, he was in 1872 in Marburg Dr. phil. PhD. During his studies he became a member of the Germania Marburg fraternity . After unsuccessful habilitation in 1874, he joined the archives service at the Marburg State Archives and moved to Münster that same year. From 1881 to 1895 he was director of the Royal State Archives there. In 1895 he moved to the Secret State Archives in Berlin, where he was given the title "Secret Archives Councilor" in 1900.

Masonic career

In 1897, Keller was accepted into the Masonic lodge for unity and steadfastness in Kassel. In 1899 he moved to the Urania Lodge for Immortality in Berlin. He was the grand speaker of the Royal York Grand Lodge for Friendship . In the Inner Orient of this grand lodge, he was Supreme Master .

Scientific work

Keller published numerous writings on secret societies, academies, language societies and on the Reformation; in 1891 he was the founder of the Comenius Society. Together with Wilhelm Begemann , he is considered to be the founder of scientific Freemason historiography (including the spiritual foundations of Freemasonry and public life .
