Ludwig Prautzsch

Ludwig Prautzsch (* 1926 in Hardisleben , Thuringia ) is a German church musician . He achieved particular importance as a Bach researcher, lecturer and church music director .

Live and act

Prautzsch grew up in a Thuringian rectory and received organ lessons from Werner Tell in Magdeburg . From 1947 to 1952 he studied church music at the Hochschule für Musik Berlin under Wolfgang Reimann and Joseph Ahrens . In 1952 he was appointed to the Petri Church in Soest ( Westphalia ) as the successor to Herbert Kelletat . This was followed by eleven years as a cantor and music lecturer at the Hessian Diakoniezentrum Hephata . In 1968, Prautzsch moved to Kassel , where he was cantor of the church in the Kirchditmold district for 24 years . In addition to his work as a cantor, he performed other tasks in the regional trombone council, in the regional synod, in the association council of Protestant church choirs, on the board of the association of church workers and as regional chairman of church musicians.

Prautzsch has been retired since 1992 and lives with his wife Ingeborg in Kassel. He has lively contact with his 13 grandchildren. In the church music training center Schlüchtern he gives lectures on hymnology , music theory and history.

In 2008 Ludwig Prautzsch was awarded the Heinrich Schütz Medal for his special services to church music. This highest award of the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck in the field of church music has been given for a very high level of commitment and exceptional achievements in church music since 2003.

His most important field of work is the exploration of the hidden symbolism in the works of Johann Sebastian Bach . In 1976 he was involved in founding the international working group for theological Bach research. His work on the use of symbolic numbers in Johann Sebastian Bach's work caused a sensation in the professional world.
