Ludwig Spätling (born June 21, 1949 in Duisburg ) is a German doctor and emeritus professor at the Ruhr University Bochum .

Based on Spätling's studies, gynecologists recommend that women take magnesium in early pregnancy to prevent premature births.

Life

Spätling was born on June 21, 1949 in Duisburg . He studied medicine in Marburg , after completing his doctorate in 1974, he began his specialist training at the University Women's Clinic. This ended at the women's clinic at the University Hospital Zurich , where he initially worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the local perinatal physiology laboratory. He continued his several years of senior physician activity in Zurich at the University Women's Clinic of the Ruhr University Bochum , where he also completed his habilitation in 1988 and was appointed adjunct professor in 1993. In 1997 he was appointed director of the gynecological clinic at the Fulda Clinic .

In addition to research on the physiology of the ovary and the situation of the heart , circulation and lungs during pregnancy, his research focuses on the development, diagnosis and therapy of threatened premature birth . The resulting methods of pulsatile bolus tocolysis and magnesium substitution in pregnancy have become widespread. He also optimized suturing techniques with which it is possible to stop life-threatening postnatal bleeding. His research was funded from 1983 to 2002 by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the German Research Foundation.

He experienced the considerable problems of young couples at the transition to parenthood in his daily work as a gynecologist . In order to help here, he integrated partnership-stabilizing knowledge into the birth preparation and thus created the "birth and family preparation ". In order to mediate them, he first founded a "Fulda Family School" in Fulda and to provide further support for prospective and young families founded the German Family Foundation in 2000 .

Since 2009 he has been a member of the "Frankfurt Future Council".

In 2020 the handbook “Birth and Family Preparation” was published, which for the first time combines the knowledge of many experts on this topic, combined with materials that make it easier for midwives to design courses.
