Ludwig Stock (archivist)

Christian Ludwig Stock (born November 14, 1778 in Halle (Saale) ; † May 26, 1861 in Wernigerode ) was a German archivist and historian .

Life

Ludwig Stock, who came from the city of Halle in the Prussian Duchy of Magdeburg , became registrar with the Magdeburg government in January 1817 after the formation of the Magdeburg administrative district of the Prussian province of Saxony . In this function, he was also responsible for the archives of the former archbishopric and later duchy of Magdeburg, including the monastery archives of this district.

In the autumn of 1823 he took over the construction of the Prussian Provoncial Archives (State Archives from 1867) established in Magdeburg , today's State Archives of Saxony-Anhalt , of which he was in charge until his retirement in March 1857. Through his work, Stock laid the foundation for building up the holdings of this archive, which is very important for the region. The royal archivist a. D. in Wernigerode in the Harz. He died of old age and was buried on May 30, 1861 in the Theobaldifriedhof in Nöschenrode .
