life and work

Work by Ludwig Wilding with reflective viewer

Wilding studied art history and philosophy in Mainz and Stuttgart and then worked as a designer in the textile industry. In the 1960s he was a member of the New Tendencies art movement . Between 1964 and 1990 Ludwig Wilding took part in a total of sixteen annual DKB exhibitions as a full member of the German Association of Artists . From 1969 to 1992 Wilding was a professor at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg . In 2007 Ludwig and Ingeborg Wilding founded the Foundation for Concrete Art and Design together with the city of Ingolstadt.

Ludwig Wilding's starting point was the line. By superimposing two-dimensional line structures (the moiré effect), the artist explored irritations in visual perception and generated pseudo-movements, virtuality, stereoscopies, paradoxical bodies and anamorphoses. With his works, Wilding constructed situations that go beyond the usual art experience and give the viewer the opportunity to consciously experience a personal experience. Therefore Wilding's art promotes the dissolution of role differences between artist and viewer in favor of an activating participation of the viewer. In addition, his pictures do not have any prior knowledge of cultural codes and focus on the sensual level of experience. Art becomes “art for everyone”, as the artist groups Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel (GRAV) and the loose association Nouvelles Tendances put it in the 1960s. At the same time, Wilding began to grapple with the moiré and also felt connected to the demands of the observer-dependent movements. Wilding's goal was to change and activate perception that is conditioned and shaped by everyday and work processes. The moiré effect in particular should not only irritate the viewer, but also draw attention to the constructiveness of perception and vision. The visual illusion ideally leads to the process of reflective thinking.
