The sixth edition of the COSAFA-Cup , officially COSAFA Castle Cup 2002 , took place from May 5th to September 28th, 2002 . Eight teams from South Africa played for the title of South African champion. South Africa won its first title. The preliminary round took place from March 16 to April 21. Madagascar took part in the tournament for the first time.
Game mode
The top four of the last tournament were automatically qualified for the final round of the tournament . The remaining eight participants played in the first round, the four winners of which qualified for the finals. The tournament was continued in the knockout system.

The first round took place from March 16 to April 21, 2002. Madagascar, South Africa, Mozambique and Swaziland were able to qualify for the finals.
