The first edition of the COSAFA-Cup , officially COSAFA Castle Cup 1997 , took place from April 12th to August 31st, 1997 . 5 soccer teams from South Africa played here for the title of South African champion. Zambia won its first title. The preliminary round took place from March 1st to 16th. Tanzania took part in the tournament for the last time.
Game mode
Eight of the nine participating countries played against each other in the first round. Tanzania was set as a bye for the finals. The four winners qualified for the finals and played in a group stage for the title of South African champions.
