The COSAFA Senior Challenge 2013 took place from July 6th to 20th, 2013 in Zambia . After the cancellation of the COSAFA Senior Challenge 2010 and the tournaments not held in 2011 and 2012 due to financial problems, it is the first event since 2009.
13 teams from the South African region (as well as others with guest performance rights) competed for the title of "Master of Southern Africa ".
The tournament was endowed with one million South African rand .
Preliminary round / qualification
The national teams of Comoros and Madagascar have not signed up for the tournament. Instead, the Kenyan national soccer team and the Tanzanian national soccer team were invited as visiting teams.
On May 17, 2013 Tanzania canceled its participation. On May 20, it was announced that the Equatorial Guinean national soccer team will replace the team from Tanzania. On June 24, 2013, Equatorial Guinea also canceled its participation due to financial problems.
Attendees
The six teams with the highest position in the FIFA world rankings automatically qualified for the quarter-finals. The other participants had to compete in a group stage.

Final round
The games in the final round were played in the knockout system . If there was a draw after the normal playing time of 90 minutes, there was an extension of 15 minutes twice and, if there was still no winner after the end of the extra time, a penalty shoot-out (converted penalties in brackets). In addition, there were games between the losers of the quarter-finals.
