The COSAFA Cup 2014 was to take place in Botswana from September 13th to 28th, 2014 . The tournament was canceled on July 30, 2014 due to logistical and financial problems in Botswana. A possible event in November or December 2014 in another country was considered. The tournament was finally canceled on September 2, 2014.
14 teams from South Africa as well as the Ghanaian national soccer team with guest rights were supposed to play for the title of "champions of southern Africa ".
Preliminary round / qualification
The Comorian national football team had given up their starting place. The national football team of Réunion was not eligible to play due to its association status.
Attendees
The top five teams in the FIFA world rankings and visiting team Ghana should automatically qualify for the quarter-finals. The other participants should compete in a group stage consisting of two groups. The respective group winners would also have qualified for the quarter-finals.
