Ludwig de Foro

Ludwig de Foro († May 14, 1391 ) was titular bishop of Phocaea and auxiliary bishop in the dioceses of Verden , Minden , Münster and Schwerin .

Life

On November 22, 1354, the then prior of the Dominican monastery in Wesel , Frater Ludwig, was appointed by Pope Innocent VI. appointed titular bishop of Fogien (Phocaea) . It remains unclear whether his nickname de Foro is identical with von dem Markt or von der Mark . Likewise, whether he was a brother of Count Theodorich von der Mark , who was named as the benefactor of the Dominican monastery .

Bishop Ludwig was active in the dioceses of Verden, Minden and Münster.

In the diocese of Schwerin, Bishop Ludwig also helped out, which was evidently not entirely safe in the turbulent times. On May 18, 1356, as auxiliary bishop of Schwerin, he promised not to claim against Duke Albrecht and his subjects because of the robbery that had happened to him in Mecklenburg . Since the robbery must have occurred earlier, it was not his first appearance in the Schwerin diocese.

On August 11, 1356, Bishop Ludwig granted an indulgence in favor of the Wakstow Chapel, ex permissione honoribilium virorum decani et capituli Zwerinensis, administratorum sede vacante, officium ponificale exercens… . At this point in time the Episcopal See of Schwerin had not yet been reoccupied after the death of Bishop Andreas von Wislica .

Bishop Ludwig died on May 14, 1391 and was buried in Wesel in the choir of the Dominican Church on the left side of the altar, because he had also once consecrated this church.

seal

Bishop Ludwig had a parabolic seal in red wax. In a richly decorated Gothic niche, the mother Mary with the Christ child on her left arm, in front of them sits a unicorn with an open mouth, underneath a right kneeling bishop between two shields standing in the edge of the seal, right with a right unicorn, left with a right, with three heart-shaped figures occupied inclined beams.

The inscription reads: S 'FRATIS LODOW / ICI DE / I GRA EPI FOGIEN'.
