The Lugela (as of 2020 Sea Eagle ) is a cargo ship that was boarded by Somali pirates in 2010 .

history

The ship of the Sietas type 111a was laid down on May 4, 1984 and was launched on July 25 of that year at the Sietas shipyard in Hamburg. The client was the shipping company Klaus Block from Drochtersen, which took it over on September 15, 1984 as Albatros . The ship went under numerous names in the following years and was taken over as Thor Sophia by the shipping company J. Poulsen Shipping from Korsør in 2004 . In September 2009, the ship was at the Kori Shipping Company sold from Panama, which in Lugela renamed and the Greek shipping company TDM Carriers bereedern left.

2010 incident

The Lugela was hijacked by Somali pirates on September 25, 2010 while sailing from Egypt to Mauritius 900 nautical miles east of Eyl on the Somali coast , with a crew consisting of twelve Ukrainians and a cargo of steel and wire on board . The cargo ship made an emergency call to its Greek shipping company, a little later it changed course in the direction of Somalia.

On the evening of September 26, 2010, the pirates disembarked again with no prey and no ransom. The ship continued on to the port of destination. None of the crew members was harmed. Details of the release were not known.

In March 2011 Remstoan Investments took over the ship and had it managed as Lady Remington III by Vanguard Shipping Great Lakes. In 2012, the ship was transferred to the Northern Transportation Company, which returned it to Remstoan Investments in August 2013. In September 2013, the ship went to Mermaid International Shipping, which initially renamed it Navi Wind and in 2014 Stella di Mare . In 2015 the Canadian Shipping Line Company bought the freighter without renaming it and since September 2019 the ship has been operating as Sea Eagle for Ibn Battuta Maritime under the management of Sea Scanner Logistics.
