Luigi Credaro (born January 15, 1860 in Sondrio ; died February 15, 1939 in Rome ) was an Italian politician and university professor.

Life

Luigi Credaro studied philosophy at the Collegio Ghislieri of the University of Pavia and received the Laurea in 1885. He received his doctorate in 1889 at the University of Leipzig under Wilhelm Wundt . In Italy he became a lecturer in the history of philosophy. In 1901 he was appointed professor of education at La Sapienza University in Rome, where he taught until 1935. Credaro founded the Rivista pedagogica in 1907 . Among other things, he wrote articles about the German philosophers Immanuel Kant and Johann Friedrich Herbart .

Credaro was elected member of the Partito Radicale Italiano in 1895 and was re-elected until 1919. In 1904, as a member of parliament, he played a key role in reforming teacher training. From 1910 to 1914 he was Minister of Education in the Luzzatti government and in the Giolitti IV government. During his tenure, the Liceo moderno was created in 1911. In 1919 he was appointed senator.

After the end of the First World War, Credaro became prefect of the Venezia Tridentina region annexed by Italy on July 20, 1919 , which included Trentino-Alto Adige , which was assigned to the Kingdom of Italy in the Treaty of Saint-Germain . Credaro pursued the policy of Italianization and the suppression of their cultural rights towards the German and Ladin majority of the population . Credaro was deposed in 1922 after the march on Bolzano organized by the fascists . He remained a senator and from then on worked again as a university lecturer.
