Luigi Galleani

Luigi Galleani (born August 12, 1861 in Vercelli in Piedmont , Italy , † November 4, 1931 in Caprigliola , Tuscany ) was a major figure of anarchism in the 20th century and a proponent of the violent overthrow of the US government. Galleani is one of the representatives of communist anarchism or one of the rebellious anarchists .

Life

Luigi Galleani was the son of a middle-class family. During his studies in Turin , he became an anarchist and finally dropped out prematurely. After a threat of arrest in Italy, he fled to France and had to leave France again after participating in a May Day demonstration . Galleani resumed his studies in Geneva , but was also expelled from Switzerland after organizing a memorial service for the Haymarket Riot .

Back in Italy, Luigi Galleani was arrested and imprisoned in a prison on the island of Pantelleria off the coast of Sicily . After five years in prison he managed to escape to Egypt , where he avoided extradition by moving to London and then to the United States in 1901 . Galleani quickly became known in radical circles where he promoted violence as a revolutionary tool. Since he was threatened with arrest in New Jersey for inciting disobedience, he fled to Canada and was also deported there.

Galleanis Newspaper Cronaca Sovversiva

In Vermont , Galleani founded the Italian-language anarchist newspaper Cronaca Sovversiva ("Subversive Chronicle") in 1903 . Sacco and Vanzetti also wrote for the newspaper until it was banned by the Sedition Act of 1918 . A radical group was formed around Galleani, who became known as the Galleanists and were responsible for many attacks in the USA.

Galleani was deported to Italy in the course of the Palmer Raids in 1919, where he was forced into exile on an island on the Italian coast. After Mussolini came to power, Galleani was able to return to mainland Italy, where he was under constant police surveillance. He died of a heart attack in a village in Tuscany at the age of 70.
