Count Luigi Torelli (born February 9, 1810 in Villa di Tirano , † November 14, 1887 in Tirano ) was an Italian officer , prefect and politician .

Life

Torelli studied at the University of Pavia law . In 1848 he took part in a five-day popular uprising against the Austrians in Milan , who were temporarily expelled from the city. Torelli achieved a certain fame because, as a leading member of the rebels, he had put the Italian tricolor on the top of the Milan Cathedral . After the suppression of the uprising, he went to neighboring Piedmont and became a member of parliament there in 1849 and also an officer in the local army . As such, he took part in the Italian Wars of Unification in 1849 and 1859 and received several prestigious awards.

In 1860 Torelli was appointed senator and until 1864 he took over the office of prefect in various provinces . In 1864 and 1865, as Minister of Agriculture, Industry and Trade, he succeeded in expanding trade relations with China . In 1866 he put down an uprising as prefect in Palermo , after which he became prefect of the province of Venice from 1867 to 1872 . Torelli was also a member of various business associations and scientific and social institutions since 1853.

The Italian Navy later named a submarine after him.
