from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Luis Alfredo Garavito Cubillos (born January 25, 1957 in Génova , Quindío ) is a Colombian serial killer who killed at least 138 boys, mostly between the ages of 8 and 13, between 1992 and 1999.

Life

According to Garavito Cubillo, he is said to have grown up as the oldest of seven children in an atmosphere of violence. He was repeatedly beaten and mistreated by his father, but also by his neighbors . At the age of 16 he ran away and worked first as a warehouse worker, then as a street vendor. Because alcoholism and mental illness he had been in treatment since he as suicidal should have been considered.

Modus operandi

Garavito Cubillos, who is characterized as homosexual and pedophile , acted mainly out of sadistic motives . He proceeded strategically according to a certain pattern in his actions, first selecting the children according to certain external characteristics that were convenient for him during the day, and then luring them to a remote area not far from the town center with ingratiating words and various promises. While under the influence of alcohol he tied, tortured and raped the children there, then cut their throats and beheaded them. He was active in at least 59 cities in eleven Colombian departments . The focus of the acts was in the western Colombian province of Risaralda .

Course of the investigation

Investigations came when 36 decayed children's corpses were discovered in a coffee-growing area near the city of Pereira , which were only superficially buried on a weed plot. The investigations that followed were the most extensive in Colombian criminal history. The police got him on the track with hotel and bus bills, telegrams and testimonies. It was proven that he always stayed under a false name wherever children had disappeared without a trace. Since he has also traveled to neighboring Ecuador , the authorities fear that he murdered there too. He confessed to the murder of 140 children.

punishment

After the case became known, a debate broke out in the South American country about the sentence for the murderer. Police chief General Rosso Jose Serrano , like many relatives of the victims, called for the death penalty for Garavito, although this does not exist in Colombia. Since long prison terms are prohibited in Colombia, he was sentenced on December 17, 1999 to 30 years in prison. His imprisonment was reduced to 22 years for helping to find the bodies of his deaths.
