Luis Castro , full name Luis Ernesto Castro , (born July 31, 1921 in Palermo , Montevideo , † December 16, 2002 ) was a Uruguayan football player .

Born in Barrio Palermo , Castro was the brother of the two football players Braulio Castro (Nacional) and Enrique Castro (Nacional). Castro, who is used in particular as a right-hand striker, is described as a fast-paced, dribbling, agile, two-footed player. He played for Nacional Montevideo from 1936 to 1950 . After Castro first played there in the youth team, he was part of the squad in the Primera División from 1939 - the year of his debut in the first team - to 1949 . During this period he completed at least 137 games in the league, in which he scored 72 goals. Across all competitions, he has made 274 appearances and 116 goals. In 1939, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1946 and 1947, Castro, nicknamed Mandrake by the fans, won the Uruguayan championship with the Bolsos . In 1940, 1942 and 1946 they also got the upper hand in the Copa Aldao and in 1945 in the Copa de Confraternidad Escobar-Gerona . He chose his next career station in Argentina at the Racing Club . He was active there in 1950, but returned to Uruguay that same year. From 1950 to 1954 he was in the ranks of the Uruguayan club Defensor . From 1951 to 1953 "La Violeta" recorded 35 games and nine goals for him.

National team

Castro was a member of the senior national team of Uruguay , for which he completed 19 international matches between January 10, 1942 and June 5, 1954. He scored four international goals. With the Celeste he won the South American Championship in 1942 in his native Uruguay . Castro also took part in the 1954 World Cup with Uruguay and was scheduled in the squad as a left striker. In the course of the competition, however, he was not used.
