Luis Zayas first started in high jump competitions in 2013. At that time he moved into the final of the U20 Pan American Championships, in which he was ninth with a skipped 2.05 m. By 2014 he had increased to a personal best of 2.18 m. In 2015 he won the silver medal at the U20 Pan American Championships in Edmonton, Canada. In 2016 Zayas started at the U20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz. In the course of the season he had already jumped 2.25 m. At the championships he moved into the final, in which he won the gold medal with a new personal best of 2.27 m. All of his eight jumps up to this height were successful on the first attempt. Alongside the Cuban world record holder Javier Sotomayor , he is the second athlete from the island state to win this competition.
In 2017 he was unable to build on these achievements. In 2018 he started at the Central America and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, where he finished sixth with 2.19 m. In 2019 Zayas won the gold medal at the Pan American Games in Lima with a new personal best of 2.30 m . He jumped the same height in the final of the World Championships two months later in Doha, with which he finished fifth. In 2020 he also competed in the halls for the first time and took part in various meetings in competitions in Europe. In his second indoor competition in Slovakia, he set his highest jumped height to date of 2.33 m, thus equalizing the year's best.
