Luis Méndez (marksman)

Luis Méndez , also known as Luis Mendes , (born May 18, 1959 ) is a Uruguayan sports shooter.

Career

The 1.79 meter tall Luis Méndez already took part in 1986 with the Uruguayan team in the South American Games that year in Chile . There he won the gold medal in the team competition with the center fire pistol together with Gustavo Cadarso and José Mautone . In addition, he won the bronze medal in the team competition with the free pistol with Cardoso and Fernando Richeri . With the small caliber standard pistol, he also won a silver medal in individual. The following year he was part of the team at the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis . There he and the team secured the bronze medal with the air pistol. In his participation in the Pan American Games in 1995 , 1999 and 2007 and in the South American Games in 1994 and 1998 , he did not reach the podium. Méndez was also part of the Uruguayan squad at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney . There he was ranked 41st with the air pistol. In the following year he was three-time Uruguayan champion with the center fire, the standard and the air pistol. In 2006 he won silver at the South American Games in Buenos Aires with the 25-meter center fire pistol.

Awards

As part of the honors of the best Uruguayan athletes of the period 2009-2010 ("Deportista del Año"), he was honored on March 28, 2011 by the Comité Olímpico Uruguayo in the Teatro Solís as the best athlete of 2009 in the "Shooting" category.
