Luisa Banti

Luisa Banti (born July 13, 1894 in Florence , † February 17, 1978 ibid) was an Italian classical archaeologist and Etruscanologist .

Luisa Banti was the oldest child of the pathologist Guido Banti (1852–1925). She studied classical philology and archeology at the University of Florence in the 1920s , where she particularly followed the ancient historian and Etruscanologist Luigi Pareti (1885–1962) and the philologist Giorgio Pasquali (1885–1952). From 1930 to 1940 Banti worked in the Greek manuscript department of the Vatican Library . During the summer months she took part in the Italian excavations in Agia Triada on Crete , where she not only documented her own work, but also evaluated the notes of her predecessors Federico Halbherr , Roberto Paribeni and Enrico Stefani . In the course of this work, Banti dealt with the Minoan culture .

From 1940 Banti was a lecturer in the history of religion at La Sapienza University in Rome . In 1948 she received the chair of Classical Archeology at the University of Pavia . In 1950 she moved to the University of Florence, where she mainly held lectures in the field of Etruscology until her retirement in 1965. During this time she was also a visiting professor in the USA several times .
