Luiz Aquila

Luiz Aquila da Rocha Miranda (born February 27, 1943 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian artist . He is considered a pioneer of Brazilian informalism , as the "father of the '80 generation" of Brazilian painters.

Career

The son of the artist and architect Alcides da Rocha Miranda was introduced to art at an early age by his father. As early as 1959/60 he studied painting , drawing and art print in Rio de Janeiro . In 1962 he took courses at the Institute of Art and Architecture at the University of Brasília . He received a scholarship from France and from 1965 lived for some time in Paris, where he worked at the Cité International des Arts .

In 1967 he was able to study etchings at the Portuguese printers' guild in Lisbon ; Here he had his first noteworthy solo exhibition at Galeria 111 in 1968, which was followed by several in Great Britain, France and Spain as well as in his home country in the 1970s. During his time in Portugal, he began to work as an art teacher, first in Évora , then back in his homeland in Brasilia and in Lima, Peru . At the Slade School of Fine Art in London he continued his education in lithography and etchings from 1972 . From 1978 to 1986 he taught at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage , the school for fine arts in Rio de Janeiro, where he also set up his studio . From 1988 to 1991 he was director of the school.

Aquila lives in Petrópolis and Rio de Janeiro . He is the father of Smoke City singer Nina Miranda .
