Luka Mitrović ( Serbian - Cyrillic Лука Митровић ; born March 21, 1993 in Novi Sad ) is a Serbian basketball player who was most recently under contract with the German first division club and EuroLeague participant Brose Bamberg . The 2.05 m power forward was the 60th pick in the 2015 NBA draft .

Career

Mitrović began playing basketball in his hometown of Novi Sad before joining the youth team of KK Hemofarm from Vršac in 2009 and signing his first professional contract for the 2010/11 season.

For the 2012/13 season Mitrović signed with the Serbian club KK Roter Stern Belgrade , for which he played nationally in the KLS and supranational in the Adriatic Basketball League (ABA League) , in which mainly clubs from the former Yugoslavia participate. In both leagues, Red Star Belgrade reached the final of the playoffs, but lost to city rivals KK Partizan Belgrade . Partizan also faced Partizan in the final of the Radivoj Korać Cup, but this time the Red Star emerged victorious. Just a year later, Mitrović's role in the team had increased and he became a permanent part of the rotation, to which many minutes of play were entrusted. This year he also played for the first time in his career in the highest European club competition, the EuroLeague 2013/14 , whereby Red Star Belgrade had to admit defeat in the first group stage. In the KLS final, Mitrović met Partizan again with the Red Star and, as in the previous season, missed winning the title. In the ABA league they met in the semi-finals on the Croatian club and later champions KK Cibona Zagreb and were eliminated. The only title win of the season was in the Radivoj Korać Cup, in which Mitrović and Roter Stern were crowned winners in the final against KK Mega Vizura with a score of 81:80.

In the following season 2014/15 Mitrović was appointed captain of the team and was able to improve his performance significantly. In all three leagues together he reached 9.73 points, 5.71 rebounds and 2.29 assists in an average of 24.5 minutes of use. Red Star Belgrade has won three titles this season. They won both the Serbian championship against Partizan, as well as the championship in the ABA league against the Croatian club KK Cedevita Zagreb and for the third time in a row the Radivoj Korać Cup against last year's finalist KK Mega Leks. At the same time Mitrović played again with Belgrade in the EuroLeague 2014/15 and they even reached the intermediate round of the top 16. With only four wins from 14 games, however, Red Star clearly missed participation in the playoffs.

In August 2015 Mitrović renewed the Red Star and signed a two-year contract until the end of the 2016/17 season. In 2016 the championship again succeeded in the KLS against Partizan and in the ABA league against Mega Leks and Roter Stern again took part in the Radivoj Korać Cup, but then retired in the semi-finals against city rivals Partizan. In the EuroLeague 2015/16 , Red Star qualified for the playoffs with 12 wins and 12 defeats and met in the quarter-finals against later champion CSKA Moscow , who clearly prevailed in three games. Mitrović, however, missed most of the season due to a knee injury that he sustained shortly after the start of the season in October.

After another contract extension for another year until 2018, Mitrović started the new 2016/17 season with a Red Star, in which the triple was again successful. Belgrade was in the final against FMP Železnik for the third time in a row champion of the KLS and for the third time in a row champions of the ABA league against Cedevita. In addition, after the semi-final in the previous year, the revenge against Partizan in the final of the Radivoj Korać Cup, which Red Star clearly won. In the EuroLeague 2016/17 , which this season was played for the first time in a new mode without a group phase and top 16, but with 30 home and away games and subsequent playoffs of the top eight, Mitrović and Belgrade were again the only Serbian team to take part. At the end of the exhausting main round there was a showdown between Darüşşafakka Istanbul and Red Star Belgrade in a do-or-die game on the last day of the match for the last eighth place, which was still qualifying for the playoffs. However, Daçka clearly won the game with 78:62 and thus secured their place in the quarter-finals, while Belgrade was eliminated despite the same victory record due to the lost direct comparison.

In June 2017, the reigning German champions and EuroLeague participant Brose Bamberg announced the engagement of Luka Mitrović, who signed a three-year contract. Due to a protracted knee injury at the beginning of the second half of the season, he was only able to play 19 BBL and 16 EuroLeague games and was out for the rest of the season. He then underwent knee surgery, which in turn would let him miss at least the first half of the new season, so that the club dissolved the contract with Mitrović.

National team

Luka Mitrović can also look back on a successful time in the youth national teams of Serbia. At the U-16 European Championship in Lithuania in 2009 Mitrović was in the squad of a Serbian selection for the first time. After beating Russia in the quarterfinals, Serbia lost in the semifinals to eventual champions Spain. In the subsequent game for third place, they defeated Poland and won bronze. In 2011 Mitrović was again part of the junior selection at the U-18 European Championship in Poland. The Serbian team prevailed against France in the quarter-finals and defeated Italy in the semi-finals. In the final Serbia had to admit defeat against Spain 65:71 and became vice European champion. In the same year Mitrović was also in the squad of the youth national team at the U-19 World Cup in Latvia. After two wins against Australia and Argentina, Serbia moved into the final against Lithuania. However, they lost significantly against the Lithuanian selection with 67:85.
