Lukomir is a small mountain village in the center of Bosnia and Herzegovina about 40 kilometers southwest of Sarajevo . With its location at 1455  m , Lukomir is the highest settlement in the country and the only one at over 1300 m altitude.

geography

Lukomir is located on the southern foothills of the Bjelašnica massif and above the Rakitnica canyon on its north side on the territory of the large municipality of Konjic . The next neighboring town Umoljani is behind a ridge in the east and is about ten kilometers away by car.

history

Due to the stećci (tombstones) found in the village and its surroundings , some of which date from the 14th and 15th centuries, historians assume that Lukomir has been settled at least since that time.

During the Bosnian War the place was hardly affected due to its remoteness, but was attacked with artillery several times from the other side of the Rakitnica Canyon .

traffic

View of Lukomir

Lukomir can only be reached by car from the north and only between April and December. Two unpaved roads connect the place with Konjic in the northwest and Sarajevo in the northeast. Due to its location directly on the Rakitnica Gorge, which is about 800 meters deep, there are no road connections to the south.

However, hiking trails lead from Lukomir on the edge of the gorge to the neighboring villages of Čuhovići and Umoljani, as well as down into the gorge.

population

Lukomir is inhabited from spring to autumn; In November the few, mostly older, residents leave the place and only return in April. They run pasture farming in the northern Poljes . At the last census before the war in 1991, Lukomir still had 156 inhabitants, 152 of them Bosniaks . In 2013 there were only 81 inhabitants. On the southern outskirts there is a small mosque with a wooden minaret that looks out over the canyon.

tourism

Houses in Lukomir

Since the road to Lukomir was expanded in 2004, the mountain village has become a popular destination for Sarajevan residents and tourists, so that the residents can earn a little extra income by selling simple meals, coffee or cheese to visitors. After 2010 a lodge was built for tourists. Lukomir is specifically marketed by the tourism authorities as a remote mountain idyll.
