Luna Bergere Leopold (born October 8, 1915 in Albuquerque , New Mexico , † February 23, 2006 in Berkeley , California ) was a leading American geologist , hydrologist and geomorphologist and the son of Aldo Leopold .

Leopold developed a new philosophy of water management and suggested that it should be traced back not only to traditional factors such as economic , social and political principles, but also to geological , geographical and climatic foundations. He argued that water management cannot be successful when viewed from an economic and political point of view alone.

Leopold was President of the Geological Society of America in 1972 . In 1971 Leopold was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1973 he received the GK Warren Science Award from the National Academy of Sciences , of which he had been a member since 1967. In 1991 he was awarded the National Medal of Science , in 1994 the Penrose Medal and in 2006 the Benjamin Franklin Medal in the field of geosciences.
