Lunik was a Swiss music band that after their early years in spherical trip-hop later played mainly pop and rock music. On December 11, 2013, Lunik gave their official farewell concert together with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra at the Kultur Casino in Bern .

Band history

Lunik was founded in 1997 by Adi Amstutz, Luk Zimmermann, Mats Marti, Walo Müller and Anton Höglhammer. In 1998 the singer Jaël Malli joined the band, Anton Höglhammer left the band. A year later, the first album , based stylistically in the field of trip-hop , was released, Rumor . After the accompanying tour, bassist Walo Müller decided to leave the band. With the second album Ahead , Lunik took a big step towards pop music. Live the band was supported by Oli Müller on bass. Adi Amstutz left the band and was not replaced by a new member. Instead of electronics, Jaël, Zimmermann and Marti increasingly opted for acoustic sounds and released the album Weather . On the Weather tour and also on the acoustic tour that followed, they were supported by Cédric Monnier on keyboards and Jacob Suske on bass.

In 2004 the live album Life Is on Our Side was released . In 2005 Jacob Suske and Cédric Monnier, who had been supporting Lunik for a long time with live performances in Switzerland, Austria and Germany, were accepted as band members. At the same time, drummer Mats Marti left the band. At the beginning of 2006 Chrigel Bosshard joined Lunik as the new drummer.

The fourth studio album Preparing to Leave was released in September 2006 and entered the Swiss album charts at number one. After a few weeks, the album received platinum status , which means at least 30,000 records sold in Switzerland. The first single Little Bit was released in the summer of 2006.

On April 17, 2009, the best-of album Lonely Letters was released , which contained newly recorded and arranged songs from previous albums. The result was received rather critically by fans and critics.

The long-awaited fifth studio album Small Lights in the Dark was released in February 2010 in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, accompanied by the first single People Hurt People , but was also released in Germany in May.

On January 20, 2012, the band announced that drummer Chrigel Bosshard had left the band at the end of 2011 and that they will continue to exist as a trio.

After their album What is next , which was released in September 2012 , they went on tour in Switzerland from October to December. During some of these concerts there was a duet with Thomas Godoj . Just as he came to Switzerland to perform with Lunik, Jaël came to Germany on his So gewollttour in December 2012 to sing the song What If I - the moment with him . The song had been written a few weeks earlier at a meeting in a Berlin studio by both artists and Luk Zimmermann. It was published on the album Men Are So by Godoj, which went on sale on May 31, 2013.

At the end of 2013, the band will split up, they announced on July 27, 2013.

In spring 2014 the concert documentary "Lunik - the last concert" was released with recordings from the farewell concert in Bern and interviews with the band members. The film was largely made possible with money from crowdfunding.

style

The music of the debut album Rumor can be described as spherical trip-hop . In addition to singing, electronic sounds and rhythms dominate. The second album Ahead is a very independent interpretation of modern pop music, like the previous album with a high electronic content, but a less melancholy mood. The turn to actual pop music comes to the fore on the third album Weather . Catchy melodies that are mainly carried by acoustic guitar and hand-played drum rhythms.

The lyrics are about love and interpersonal relationships, but also about self-confidence, insecurity or moods.

Band members

After various line-up changes, the band consisted of:

Jaël

Jaël
Schröder's Garden (2005)

Jaël Malli, who calls herself only Jaël as a singer, is the singer of Lunik. She joined Lunik in 1998 as a guest singer. In the summer of 2000 she completed her teacher training seminar as a full band member. Together with Luk Zimmermann, Jaël founded the band MiNa in 2007 , whose debut album Playground Princess was released in the same year.

Luk carpenter

Luk Zimmermann is a guitarist and is also responsible for the production work in the studio. Zimmermann was born on August 3, 1973 in Leibstadt, the son of Giovanni and Lis Zimmermann. He has a sister. Like Jaël, he is a teacher, but has never worked as such. Instead, he devoted himself to his work as a producer and musician. He currently lives in Bern.

Zimmermann is also involved in the MiNa project together with Jaël.

Cedric Monnier

Cedric Monnier was born on July 25, 1977 in Zurich . Since 2003 he has strengthened the band as a keyboard player. In 2005 he became an official member of the band.
