Lunsar is a city in Sierra Leone . It is located in the Chiefdom Marampa in the Port Loko district in the North West Province .
The city is mostly inhabited by Temne . Because of its importance, however, numerous members of other ethnic groups have also immigrated. The population grew from 12,132 in 1963 to 16,723 in 1974. The closure of the mines then led to stagnation. In 1985 16,073 people were counted, in 2004 16,567 inhabitants.
Lunsar is on the road from the state capital Freetown to Makeni . Iron ore mining in Marampa, six kilometers to the east, used to be economically important .
Today the place is a market and transshipment point for rice, palm oil and palm kernels.
There is a privately run (Roman Catholic) hospital in the city.
City name
The name of the city goes back to the discovery of ore . At first the Temne called the place Ro-Sar (in Temne ), which means something like "the place where stones are found". The current name of the city later developed from this.
