The Luther Church in Altenkessel

The Luther Church in the Altenkessel district of Saarbrücken is a Protestant church. It is a listed building.

history

The Protestant parishes of Altenkessel, Gerhardgrube, Großwald, Luisenthaler Glashütte, Neudorf and Rockershausen were combined in 1865 to form the Parish Vicariate of Luisenthal-Rockershausen, as the places had grown rapidly due to industrialization. In 1884, the Protestant believers from Viktoriaschacht, Schlehbach and Ritterstraße joined them. In 1875 Altenkessel became independent under the name "Evangelical Church Community Neudorf" and from 1956 was called "Evangelical Church Community Altenkessel".

When the independent parish was founded in 1875, the desire for its own church was expressed and in the same year a plot of land was acquired from the Saarbrücken miners' association. The project became topical in the early 1880s and the Saarlouis municipal master builder Carl Friedrich Müller was commissioned with the first sketches. In 1884 efforts were intensified and fundraising began. In 1885 Müller finally presented the building plans and estimated the costs at 68,000 to 70,000 marks.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 1, 1886, and the foundation stone was laid on June 24 of the same year. On November 1, 1887, the building contractor Richard Schmitt from Obervölklingen completed the construction work on schedule. The costs were also kept: 61,454 marks had to be paid for the construction, the interior furnishings cost 11,174 marks. The consecration took place on November 1, 1887.

In 1963 the church had to be extensively renovated. The dormers on the roof were removed under the direction of the architect Latherauch. In 1995 the church was renovated again. In 2003 the church was restored due to mountain damage . The chancel was also rebuilt and the interior was modernized. The architects Oliver Brünjes, Vera Burbach-Brünjes, Kristina Langenfeld and Alexander Schwab were responsible for this.

architecture

The neo-Gothic hall church without a transept was built in a north-south direction. In the south of the country house a slender tower has been placed in front of the main portal. An octagon with a pointed helmet was added to the square tower on the third floor. In the north, a drafted choir with a three-sided end was added. The choir arch is designed as a pointed arch. In the western corner of the choir and nave sits a small sacristy . The nave is defined by a high hall, which is divided into a central nave and two side aisles of equal height. Round columns with composite capitals support the yokes with the ribbed vaults .

The window axes of the nave are split in two. In the lower part there are small segment arch windows. Windows with pointed arches and tracery have been installed above . The three windows in the chancel date from 1955 and were created by the Saarbrücken architect and glass painter György Lehoczky . They represent the unbelieving Thomas , the risen Christ and the Emmaus disciples.

organ

The organ was created in 1980 by the Cologne organ builder Willi Peter and expanded in 1987. The game and register action are mechanical.
