The lucin whitefish ( Coregonus lucinensis ) is a freshwater fish from the subfamily Coregoninae . It occurs only in the latitude of Luzin in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . When the fish are landed with gill nets from a great depth (approx. 50 m), they make a squeaking noise because the air then escapes from the swim bladder due to the different pressure conditions . This is why the fish are called luzin squeaky belly or squeaky bucks by the locals .

features

The lucin vendace looks similar to the other Coregoninae due to its herring-like shape and its numerous small round scales with a silver sheen and its adipose fin . However, it is significantly smaller than the average of the genus, because the maximum length is 160 mm. In addition, it is comparatively bulbous and has relatively large eyes.

distribution

As it only occurs in the Luzin latitude , it is possibly the only vertebrate species endemic in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania; however, the Schaalsee mare ( Coregonus holsatus ) in Lake Drewitz could also be an endemic , albeit an allochthonous one .

Way of life

The Luzin whitefish normally lives in deeper water regions between 20 and 58 m depth, which explains its small size and large eyes. It only migrates to shallower stretches of water to reproduce. Their spawning season is between April and July. It mainly feeds on the hover shrimp ( Mysis relicta ).

Endangerment and Use

The lucin vendace is not specifically used for fishing. Because of its limited distribution, it is on the IUCN Red List as "Vulnerable (VU)".
