Lycium pilifolium is a plant species from the genus of the buckthorn ( Lycium ) inthe nightshade family (Solanaceae).
description
Lycium pilifolium is a 0.3 to 0.5 m high, rigid dwarf shrub . The leaves are weakly succulent and tomentose. They become 3 to 10 mm long and 1 to 4 mm wide.
The flowers are hermaphroditic and five-fold. The calyx is bell-shaped and finely bristled on the outside with both long and short glandular trichomes . The calyx tube reaches a length of 6 to 7 mm and is covered with 3 to 3.5 mm long calyx lobes. The crown is ovate-elongated to hemispherical and bent back. It is creamy white in color, the veins and the corolla lobes are purple. The corolla tube becomes 7 to 10 mm long, the corolla lobes have a length of 3 to 4 mm. The stamens are densely tomentose just above the base.
The fruit is a yellow, spherical berry with a diameter of 6 to 10 mm.
Occurrence
The species is widespread on the African continent and occurs there in South Africa in the provinces of the North Cape and Free State , as well as in Namibia .
