Lytton is a municipality in British Columbia in western Canada . In their area, the Thompson River flows into the Fraser River .

location

Favored by the meeting of the always watery rivers and the warm summers, Lytton developed into a center for white water rafting with inflatables and kayaks . The Chamber of Commerce promotes this tourist use with the slogans Rafting Capital of Canada and Canadas Rafting Capital .

The opposite west bank of the Fraser River is accessible by ferry, pedestrian and railroad bridges. This is where the Lytton First Nation reservation and the Stein Valley Nlaka'pamux Heritage Park are located . Skihist Provincial Park is eight kilometers east of Lytton on British Columbia Highway 1 , which is part of the Trans-Canada Highway System . The British Columbia Highway 12 begins in the village heading north to Lillooet . The Canadian Pacific Railway and the Canadian National Railway , which otherwise follow the Fraser and Thompson on the opposite bank, also run through the town; Ten kilometers south of Lytton, both of them change banks on the Fraser at the Cisco route point . The “Canadian” , the transcontinental long-distance train operated by VIA Rail , also crosses the town on the routes .

history

In the 19th century there was a First Nations village called Camchin ("put across (the river)") at this point .

In the mid-19th century, it was the site of a short-lived Hudson's Bay Company trading post called Fort Dallas . In the course of the Fraser Canyon gold rush in 1858, today's settlement was founded and named after the English colonial minister Edward Bulwer-Lytton . From 1901 to 1979 the New England Company , an Indian mission company of the Anglican Church of England , ran a residential school , St. George's School , in Lytton .

Smoke over Lytton (center) and the surrounding area on July 1st

Lytton regularly reports temperatures that were among the highest in Canada. The causes are dry air together with low altitude above sea level.

During the heat wave in North America in 2021 , the record for the highest temperature ever recorded in Canada was broken several times in Lytton: on June 27th 46.6 ° C, on June 28th 47.9 ° C (preliminary reading) and on June 29th 49.5 ° C. Usually the maximum temperatures in Lytton in June are around 25 ° C. The next day, the land in the area of the city caught fire after lightning had set off a forest fire, so that on the afternoon of June 30, 2021, the mayor ordered the evacuation of the place. In addition to the residents of Lytton, a total of more than 1,000 people had to leave their homes in the area. Within a few hours, 90 percent of the village, including the entire town center, was burned.
