Mária Vermes (1990)

Mária Vermes (born November 23, 1923 in Budapest ; † January 10, 2018 there ) was a Hungarian violinist and university teacher. From 1957 to 1971 she was concertmaster of the Handel Festival Orchestra in Halle .

Life

Mária Vermes was born in the Hungarian capital in 1923. From 1938 to 1947 she studied violin with Ferenc Gábriel at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest. After the Hungarian state examination she appeared as a soloist and chamber musician , for example as a member of the Hungarian harp trio ( Magyar Hárfás Trió ). Vermes also appeared on radio and television. Concert tours took her through the Eastern Bloc (GDR, Poland, Czechoslovakia) and Yugoslavia, but also to Western Europe (Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, FRG). She also taught at the Conservatory in Székesfehérvár from 1950 to 1957 .

As a result of a cultural agreement, she became first concertmaster of the Handel Festival Orchestra in Halle at the State Theater of Saxony-Anhalt in 1957 under General Music Director Horst-Tanu Margraf . As such she was also involved in the Handel Festival , where the Handel Renaissance was making rapid progress. She also headed the German-Hungarian Chamber Music Association and was in contact with the Sorbian Cultural Association in Bautzen. In 1960 she became a lecturer at the Philosophical Faculty of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg .

The Halle composer Gerhard Wohlgemuth dedicated his violin concerto to her. The piece had its first premiere in 1963 and a second premiere in the same year after a revision. Over time, however, she lost “interest” in the work, which - also due to the lack of other interpreters - fell into oblivion, as Gilbert Stöck explained. Vermes also premiered Dieter Nowka's Concerto op. 77 in 1967 .

Due to travel restrictions, she returned to Hungary in 1971, where she taught at the Franz Liszt Music Academy from 1972. She also became a visiting professor at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Her students included u. a. Sonja Korkeala . She edited several works in the Editio Musica Budapest . After an accident, she died in her hometown in 2018.

Award

In 1959 she was appointed chamber musician . In 1962 she was awarded the Handel Prize of the Halle District , in 1964 she received the Art Prize of the City of Halle.
