The Märkische Ruderverein e. V. (MR) was founded on October 31, 1901 in Berlin by the editor and writer Richard Nordhausen to promote touring rowing .

The MR is one of the clubs that significantly shaped rowing in Brandenburg and made it a popular sport . He is a member of the State Rowing Association Berlin (LRV Berlin) and the German Rowing Association (DRV).

history

At the time of the founding of the Märkischer Ruderverein only a few rowing clubs existed ; they only operated racing rowing . Rowing was also considered an exclusive and expensive sport.

The basic idea behind the founding of the MR was not to create a similar club in addition to the existing clubs, but rather to create a new kind of sporting movement on a broad basis for the general public with touring rowing. The grassroots to promote not only meant a moderate for the prevailing conditions contribution , but also access for all population groups. Women were also among the members. In 1908, a separate girls' department emerged from the support of youth and women's rowing . However, it had to be converted into an independent club when MR joined the German Rowing Association .

As part of the promotion of touring rowing, unusual types of boats were purchased at the time, double eight and double fours . The gig double quad is now considered the typical touring rowing boat. The usual hiking trips for touring rowing took members of the association on many of the North German rivers to the German and Danish Baltic coasts . In 1906 a member achieved an annual mileage of 6,037 km.

After the National Socialists came to power, the club landscape in Germany changed drastically, so that women and youth rowing were no longer possible independently of the power structures of the Third Reich . With the end of the Second World War and the loss of all boats and boathouses, club life came to a complete standstill.

The re-establishment took place in 1952 on the property that had been preserved in the western part of Berlin . True to the principles of the founding fathers, a double figure eight was purchased as early as 1964 ; it was the first to be built in Berlin after the Second World War . With the changing leisure behavior, the hiking trips not only led to the surrounding area, but also to the other continents; South America , Canada , Hong Kong and Iceland could be named as destinations .

Today the MR is involved in national and international touring rowing as a co-organizer of the touring rowing meeting (WRT) of the German Rowing Association , for example in 2005 with the 40th WRT and in 2008 with the 43rd WRT.

societies

The checkered history of the Märkischer Ruderverein, which was founded on October 31, 1901 , is closely linked to several other clubs. The first that has to be mentioned here is the Berlin rowing club "Frigga", which was created in 1908 and 1909 as a girls 'and ladies' department in MR and had to become independent in 1913 as a result of the Märkischer Rowing Club joining the German Rowing Association . Second in this row is the Berlin rowing club "Jung Frithjof", which represented the youth department of the MR, but was also run as an independent club from 1914 onwards. All three clubs resided in the same boathouse, some had their own boats and the rest were combined under the umbrella of the Märkischer Adler working group. The arrival and departure dates were arranged jointly, and the parties were partly organized jointly. At the end of the 1930s “Frigga” and “Jung Frithjof” were merged again with the Märkischer Rowing Club.

The time after the Second World War officially began on February 9, 1952 with the re-establishment of the MR, initially under the name Märkischer Adler-Wassersportverein, and under the flag of the former "Frigga", after being renamed "Märkischer Ruderverein e. V. “the old flag of the Märkischer Ruderverein will be used again. The so far last chapter in this context was written by the Märkische Ruderverein together with the Ruder Club Kirschner, both associations merged on March 1st, 1977.

Boathouses

Boathouse of MR

The boathouse of the Märkischer Ruderverein is located on the left bank of the Havel , Untere Havel-Wasserstraße km 3.5, on Pichelssee on the Pichelswerder peninsula , in the Wilhelmstadt part of the Berlin district of Spandau .

The first boathouse of the Märkische Ruderverein was built, at that time still before the gates of Berlin, on the peninsula Stralau on the Rummelsburger Bucht . The first branch boathouse on the Pichelswerder peninsula was built as early as 1903 to promote touring rowing in the wider area of Berlin . In the following years various boathouses were built southeast of Königs Wusterhausen in Cablow , Zernsdorf and Neue Mühle . Another branch was built in Werder (Havel) west of Berlin . Over the years the family boat house was no longer sufficient for rowing operations, so that after the First World War it was relocated to Baumschulenweg in the Berlin district of Treptow . During the Second World War , all the boathouses and their boats were lost. After the Second World War, only the property in Spandau could be used, and the headquarters of MR was relocated here.

"The Märker"

The Märker is the title of the official club magazine of the MR. The club magazine is created by the members themselves and gives an overview of club life, it appears quarterly.
