history

In 1882 Johann Jakob Pfister opened a furniture and bedding shop with a workshop in Kleinbasel. After his death in 1912, his wife Margaretha Pfister-Christen became the manager of the shop and workshop. In 1916 his son Fritz Gottlieb Pfister took over the company. The first truck was purchased in 1918, expanding the scope of deliveries across the city and into the region. In 1922 Fritz Gottlieb Pfister converted the company into a stock corporation and opened a branch in Zurich and two years later in Bern . In 1934 Pfister introduced the “Social Insurance Fund”, an exemplary pension fund for employees.

In 1939 the company opened a large factory and administration building on the main road Zurich-Bern in Suhr, which was subsequently expanded into a factory exhibition. Because of the ban on opening branches due to the outbreak of war, the residential exhibition was not allowed to operate; therefore the shop windows were covered with white paint. In 1941 the head office was relocated from Basel to Suhr. With the opening of new branches expanded Pfister 1949 the Ticino and 1950 in the French-speaking Switzerland . In the boom years after the end of the war, the company flourished, with the number of employees growing to 500 by the 75th anniversary in 1957. At that time, 18 trucks were available for national delivery. At the beginning of the 1960s, the product range was expanded and the furniture store was converted into a furniture store: in addition to furniture, lights, home textiles, curtains and carpets were also offered as equal departments. At the same time, the direct purchase of oriental carpets is successfully established, making Pfister the leading oriental carpet specialist in Switzerland. In 1966 Fritz Gottlieb Pfister, who ran the company until 1963, sold the family shares to the company's own pension foundation.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the company expanded by opening large sales centers in Etoy (1978) and Dübendorf (1988). In 1991 the various parts of the company were brought together under the roof of Pfister Arco Holding . In 1995 Pfister was one of the first licensees of the carpet fair trade organization STEP . At the end of the 1990s and in the 2000s, expansion accelerated through the opening of further branches and centers throughout Switzerland (Pratteln in 1997, Geneva-Meyrin in 2001, Mels in 2003, Spreitenbach in 2003, Emmen in 2005, Alchenflüh-Lyssach in 2007, 2008 downtown Bern, 2011 Villeneuve). In 1994 Pfister sold the Top Tip subsidiary to Coop . In 2015 Möbel Hubacher AG was taken over.

From the idea of a sponsorship competition for young Swiss designers, a new furniture collection with the brand name "Atelier Pfister" developed by June 2010. In 2017, the company presented the world's first fully biodegradable curtain based on the cradle-to-cradle principle .
