Linz Urfahr train station , also known as Mühlkreisbahnhof , was opened on October 18, 1888. It is located in the Urfahr district of the Upper Austrian capital Linz and is the starting point of the Mühlkreisbahn , a branch line to Aigen - Schlägl .

railway station

In the station building there is a waiting room with a no longer used ticket office. For this purpose, a ticket machine was placed in front of the track side of the station building. There is also a dispatcher and a public toilet. There is also a small bakery branch on the station premises, which is located in its own building. There is also a Park & Ride car park and a rail replacement bus stop at the station building.

There is an uncovered central platform (platforms 1 and 2) that can be reached via the tracks.

Infrastructure

Linz Urfahr train station

The station is equipped with three main tracks with a maximum usable length of 193 m, five siding for passenger traffic, a loading siding and a siding with a filling station for locomotives , multiple units and multiple units. A siding is provided with a preheating system for trains. There is a central platform between tracks 1 and 4, the track near the reception building is also equipped with a platform, which is no longer used for passenger traffic.

The station is used by several crossings crossed. On the side towards Aigen-Schlägl there are crossings with Landgutstraße (km 0.236), Hagenstraße (km 0.385) and Bundesstraße 127 (Rudolfstraße, km 0.590) which are secured with traffic lights. The intersection with Ottensheimerstrasse (km 0.953) is secured with a barrier system. The level crossings in km 0.773 (municipal road) and in km 0.805 (house entrance) have a St. Andrew's cross and a stop sign. There are private crossings at km 0.823 (sidewalk) and at km 0.838 (farm road). The (former) connecting railway to the Linz marshalling yard is currently not in operation due to the new construction of the Danube bridge. To prevent unauthorized use of the rest of the connecting line, a buffer stop was set up at the Ostkopf station. However, the mat track is located further to the east, so that the buffer stop has to be removed if a rail vehicle is loaded onto a road vehicle. The connecting line is removed from the Mattengleis, which means that the level crossing with the tram no longer exists.

The station is operated by the Austrian Federal Railways. In addition to the station, the dispatcher at Linz Urfahr station is also responsible for controlling train traffic on the entire route to Aigen-Schlägl. In the section from Linz Urfahr to Rottenegg , a “simplified remote control operation” was set up, while from Rottenegg there is a “ train control operation ” with fallback switches and train control radio.

The Mühlkreisbahn was connected to the Westbahn via the single-track Linz connecting railway to Linz Shunting Yard West and on to Linz Central Station . This connection was only used for freight traffic and company trips, but passenger trains always started or ended in Linz Urfahr. In passenger traffic, the Mühlkreisbahnhof and the main train station are connected by tram lines  3 and 4 of the Linz lines . Due to this unfavorable connection to the rest of the ÖBB railway network , discontinuation of the line was considered several times.

The connecting line between Linz Urfahr and Linz Hauptbahnhof has been out of service since December 2015, making the Mühlkreisbahn an island operation .
