Münchhausen - The Story of a Lie is a German documentary by the German director Kai Christiansen , shot between 2011 and 2012. The film was produced by the Beetz Brothers Filmproduktion in coproduction with NDR and in collaboration with ARTE and 422 South. The film had its world premiere on January 19, 2013 on ARTE.

action

Hieronymus von Münchhausen lived in the north German province in the middle of the 18th century. His marriage to Jacobine von Dunten, a woman from far away Latvia, is a happy one, the inherited property provides for a livelihood. Among his blue-blooded relatives, Münchhausen likes to brag about his military service in Russia and he has many good punch lines in store. But then a book is traded under the shop counters that spreads like wildfire: The Adventures of Baron Münchhausen. Based on reality, the greatest stories are invented, the landed gentry from Bodenwerder is properly mocked and misfortune takes its course. Münchhausen is looking for the author of this diatribe and has to watch how his name is known all over the world, but his reputation is ruined and in the end his existence is destroyed.

background

The film research takes the side of Münchhausen and wants to provide conclusions about what is true about the anecdotes about the baron of lies, what fantastic stories there are and who was their author. Who is behind the numerous stories around the world that have found their way into various recent film adaptations? Why does this country nobility become a literary figure and why did she become so popular? Because Baron Münchhausen's tales of lies began to triumph around the world during his lifetime - in more than a thousand editions and illustrations, as the fabulous graphics by the French illustrator Gustave Doré from 1862 impressively demonstrate. A grateful material for the bourgeoisie in the time of the Enlightenment.

Press reviews

  • In addition to the “story of a lie”, the ARTE documentary also conveys the background to a time in which it was able to spread. The glory and power of the nobility began to crumble, and at the same time the heyday of books began. For the interview scenes, the filmmakers not only brought a descendant of Baron Münchhausen in front of the camera, but also Monty Python member, cult filmmaker and Münchhausen fan Terry Gilliam, who conjured up a particularly crazy, opulent vision of the baron of lies on the big screen at the end of the 80s.
