Friedrich August Walchner

Friedrich August Walchner (born September 2, 1799 in Meersburg ; † February 17, 1865 in Karlsruhe ) was a German geologist , chemist , mineralogist and politician .

Life

Walchner, son of the lawyer Kasimir Walchner , studied in Göttingen and Freiburg and became a member of the Corps Rhenania Freiburg in 1817 . In Freiburg he was also a member of the fraternity cooperative / association for the processing of scientific objects and from 1818 of the old Freiburg fraternity . He completed his habilitation in Freiburg in 1823, where he became a private lecturer and associate professor .

In 1825 he was appointed as one of twelve teachers at the then newly founded Polytechnic School in Karlsruhe , where he worked as a professor of mineralogy , geognosy and chemistry . From 1833 to 1836 he held the position of director of the Polytechnic there . In 1847 he recognized the nickel content of the ores near Horbach , and the mine was named in his honor Friedrich-August-Grube .

In 1833 he became a member of the second chamber of the Baden Estates Assembly for the electoral district of Karlsruhe II. In 1848 he was a member of the preliminary parliament .

He was appointed to the management of forestry and mining in the Grand Duchy of Baden . Since 1838 Bergrat , he was retired in 1855.

In 1848 he was elected a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
