Mỹ Tâm (born January 16, 1981 in Đà Nẵng ; actually Phan Thị Mỹ Tâm ) is a Vietnamese singer .

biography

Mỹ Tâm grew up in Da Nang, Vietnam, and began ballet at the age of six . At the age of 9 she began to learn guitar and organ. With her singing, she won a school award in secondary school and first place in a local singing competition. She then attended the Military School of Art in Hanoi and learned professional singing at the Ho Chi Minh City Music Conservatory .

In 1999 she signed with the record company Vafaco, which however did not release anything from her. She sang a demo version of the song Nhé anh and together with Nguyen Quang she wrote the title Mãi yêu . Both songs would later be released on their debut album. In 2000 she changed her image and began to adopt the K-Pop style. She also worked at the Music Center in Ho Chi Minh City . She performed at the Asia New Singer Competition in Shanghai and took third place there. In 2001 she graduated from the Conservatory.

In 2001 Mỹ Tâm's debut album Mãi Yêu was released with the hit singles Toc nau moi tram , the two karaoke hits My Love Candle and Yêu dại khờ . Her music producer Quốc Bảo wrote the song Hai mươi for her 20th birthday . In 2002 her second album Đâu Chỉ Riêng Em was released , introduced by the video single Hát với dòng sông . Her song Cây Đàn Sinh Viên became a kind of student anthem that was used in various television reports . On the more R&B- oriented album there are also two cover versions of originally English-language hits, namely France Galls Poupée de cire, poupée de son ( Búp bê không tình yêu ) and Cher's Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) ( Khi xưa ta bé ).

In 2003 the album Yesterday & Now was released , which marked the final breakthrough. The album has sold over a million times to date, making it the best-selling album in the history of Vietnam. As part of her doctorate , she performed in two major stages. The cost of the appearances was $ 2.5 million. The ballad Believe in Victory was used by the Vietnamese team at the 2003 Southeast Asian Games. On November 16, 2004, she appeared as the only participant for Vietnam at the first Asia Song Festival in Seoul . There she sang Ước gì and Nụ hôn bất ngờ and received a prize for it. She was also nominated for a Mai Vang Golden Ochna Integerrima (Golden Orchid), but the award went to Hồ Quỳnh Hương .

In 2006 her fifth album Vút Bay was released , on which she first worked with a South Korean production company, Narimaru Pictures. The production company arranged their further singing training and dance lessons. For the first time she also used influences from hip-hop and soul . In addition to music, she also launched her own perfume brand, My Time .

In 2008 Trở Lại was published . The album title means something like "Comeback", which means both her return to her old, more pop-oriented style and the collaboration with music producers in her home country, although the Korean production company still provided the resources. In the same year, however, her album Tto the Beat was released , which in turn was recorded exclusively in Korea. She also received the 2008 Singer of the Year award from The Thao & Van Hoa newspaper . She was also given the honor of carrying the Olympic torch through Ho Chi Minh City for the opening of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games .

In 2010 the compilation Melodies of Time appeared in two parts, named after a project she started in 2008. For the first time the West became aware of the Vietnamese artist. ABC News named Mỹ Tâm as one of twelve "Global Pop Sensations You've Never Heard Of" in an article.

She also appeared as a juror for the fourth season of the casting show Sao Mai Điểm Hẹn on VTV3 . In addition to her, the music producers Tuấn Khanh and Hồ Hoài Anh were also part of the jury.

From 2010 to 2011 she appeared in the musical series Cho Một Tình Yêu as Linh Đan and was also responsible for the musical program. The series ran for two years and had a total of 37 episodes. Some of the songs she composed were released as video singles.

In 2012 Mỹ Tâm performed at a concert for MTV Exit in Hanoi and was appointed by the music broadcaster as its representative for Vietnam. The last album to date, Tâm, followed in 2013 . She also continued her television career, becoming a juror in the fourth season of Vietnam Idol and 2015 in the third season of The Voice of Vietnam .
