Mỹ Tho is the provincial capital of the Tiền Giang Province in the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam . The name of the city is derived from the river Mỹ Tho of the same name and can be translated as "beautiful reeds".
history
The city was founded by Chinese Ming refugees in the 17th century . The region around Mỹ Tho was under the political influence of the Khmer , which is why the city has long been the main hub for trade with Cambodia . In the 18th century, Mỹ Tho became a Vietnamese province. The railway line to Saigon (today: Ho Chi Minh City ) located around 60 km northeast was the first in all of Indochina (1883).
From 1863 the city gained greater strategic importance for the French in connection with their colonial policy in Cochinchina . This was preceded by an Allied offensive by the French together with Spain against Vietnam between 1858 and 1862, the "Cochinchina Campaign". What began as a conditional sanction measure ultimately ended in a French war of conquest.
The city is laid out like a chessboard according to the French pattern. In the center are the market and the two riverside streets Trung Trac and 30 Thang 4 . This is where most of the tourist spots such as hotels and restaurants are located, but also the locations of trade from the various economic sectors: rice, fishing and fruit (bananas, mangoes, citrus fruits).
Mỹ Tho is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Mỹ Tho .
economy
The Mỹ Thos economy is based on tourism, fishing and agricultural products such as coconuts, bananas and longan fruits. The city has a very large market that is lavishly filled with a wide variety of goods. The market for dried seafood such as muc kho (dried squid) is significant .
