Life

Worse is one of four sons of the independent plasterer master Hans Gerhard Schlimmer and his wife Elisabeth. After graduating from high school, he went to study social work and social pedagogy at the Protestant University of Applied Sciences in Ludwigshafen , where he received his diploma with distinction. This was followed by jurisprudential studies at the University of Heidelberg . After that, Schlimmer did his community service at the Hetzelstift City Hospital in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse .

After working in the social services of the city of Karlsruhe and in the addiction area of the Palatinate Clinic for Psychiatry and Neurology , Schlimmer has been educational director of the Palatinate Institute for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in Klingenmünster since 1985 . He was appointed to the directorate of the clinic and was responsible for the more than one hundred employees as the pedagogical and nursing director until 1998.

Hans-Dieter Schlimmer is divorced and has a daughter. He now lives in a partnership.

Political career

In 1972, Schlimmer joined the SPD , where he volunteered for many years. Among other things, he was long chairman of the Landau Young Socialists . He has been a member of the city council since 1979 and acted as chairman of the SPD parliamentary group from 1986 to 1998 . During his student days, Schlimmer worked part-time for Klaus von Dohnanyi and Kurt Beck . In 1998 he was elected mayor of the city of Landau, an office he held for nine years. After 60 years of uninterrupted city government led by the CDU , Schlimmer was elected as the first SPD candidate in 2007 and succeeded Christof Wolff as Lord Mayor on January 1, 2008. With a turnout of 42.8 percent, he brought it to 62.5 percent of the vote. The election had come into focus nationwide after it had become public about two weeks earlier that the CDU candidate Kai Schürholt had held a false doctorate. This scandal and the fact that after Schürholt's withdrawal from his candidacy the CDU was unable to nominate any other candidate on time contributed to Schlimmer's election victory.
