Kai Schürholt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kai Schürholt (born October 2, 1971 in Bochum ) is a former member of the CDU . Due to the unauthorized use of a doctoral degree and incorrect information in his curriculum vitae, he gained national fame as part of a candidacy for the mayoral election in Landau in the Palatinate . He was convicted in 2007 for abusive title use.

education and profession

Schürholt grew up in Castrop-Rauxel , where he graduated from Ernst-Barlach-Gymnasium in 1991. He was already active as a student in the Protestant community.

While studying Protestant theology in Heidelberg , Schürholt was active in the student associations Landsmannschaft Zaringia and Landsmannschaft Gottinga Göttingen . According to WAZ , Schürholt also occasionally worked as a lay preacher in his home parish of Castrop-Rauxel. For a time he held the office of assessor in the Berlin regional executive committee of the Evangelical Working Group (EAK) of the CDU.

Until the end of October 2006, Schürholt worked in the office of the Bundestag member Jürgen Herrmann , before that he had worked in the same position for the Bundestag member Cajus Julius Caesar . From November 2006 to March 2007 he was press spokesman for the German Brewers Association .

Candidate for the mayor's office in Landau

Schürholt caused a nationwide sensation when, in the course of his candidacy for the office of Lord Mayor of the city of Landau in the Palatinate, it became known that he - also as press spokesman for the German Brewers' Association - held the academic degree of Doctor without being entitled to it because his doctorate had not yet been completed. He then withdrew from the election campaign with the lie that he suffered from a brain tumor . After these facts became public, he withdrew his candidacy. It also turned out in retrospect that Schürholt had kept a secret from a divorce during the election campaign and was therefore not - as stated - single. After Schürholt's withdrawal, his party, which had appointed the mayor of Landau since the end of the Second World War, was no longer able to put up another candidate for election because the deadline for doing so had expired.

In the election itself he received 5.7% of the votes cast. In some cases, postal votes had been cast before the scandal. On the actual election day, however, he received just over 5% of the votes in some polling stations . At the beginning of September 2007, Schürholt anticipated an impending expulsion from the CDU by leaving the party.

On December 19, 2007, Schürholt was sentenced to a fine of 90 daily rates of 50 euros for abuse of titles, job titles and badges under Section 132a of the Criminal Code. As the prosecution appealed against this ruling, another trial took place on May 16. At the end of June 2008 Schürholt was then sentenced to a fine of 150 daily rates of 50 euros each.

Next life

Schürholt became director of the hotel in the Wöltingerode monastery . On June 30, 2017, Kai Schürholt was dismissed with immediate effect as managing director of Cellerar GmbH, which operates the Klosterhotel Wöltingerode, by its sole shareholder, the Allgemeine Hannoversche Klosterfonds, because he is said to have founded a competing company without their knowledge. The monastery fund filed a criminal complaint against him for embezzlement.
