Marion Collier Ross (born January 24, 1927 in Moberly , Randolph County , Missouri ; † February 8, 2003 in Atlanta , Georgia ) was a general in the US Army , last between 1982 and 1983 commanding general of the Third US Army ( Third US Army ) was.

Life

Ross, son of Marion Hunter Ross and his wife Irene Collier Ross, began an officer training at the US Military Academy in West Point , which he completed in 1949 as a lieutenant in the infantry . In the following decades he found use in various units of the US Army and took part as a colonel in the Vietnam War, for which he was honored with a Silver Star . In the further course of the Vietnam War he was between 1971 and 1972 commander of the 173rd Airborne Brigade ( 173rd Airborne Brigade ) and received a Legion of Merit for his services in this service . Then he was from 1972 to 1973 deputy commanding general of the 101st Airborne Division ( 101st Airborne Division ) and was awarded a bronze oak leaf branch instead of a second Legion of Merit for his services. After further assignments, he acted from 1978 to 1979 as the commanding general of the I Corps stationed in South Korea ( I Corps ) and was awarded another bronze oak leaf branch instead of a third Legion of Merit for his achievements.

Lieutenant General Ross was then between 1979 and 1982 Deputy Commanding General of the FORSCOM ( US Army Forces Command ) stationed at Fort McPherson , for the training, mobilization, deployment, support, transformation, and reorganization of the conventional forces of the US Army. He was then on December 1, 1983 Commanding General of the re-commissioned Third US Army ( Third US Army ) and remained in this post until his retirement from active military service on July 20, 1983, whereupon Lieutenant General William J. Livsey succeeded him. He was awarded the Defense Distinguished Service Medal and the Army Distinguished Service Medal for his services to national security and the defense of the United States during this period .

Ross, who was married to Ann Sylvester Ross until her death in 2000, was buried after his death in the Post Cemetery of the US Army Infantry Center at Fort Benning .
